Short Breaks in Lockdown

The Coronavirus pandemic has brought disruption to the whole world and has unfortunately stopped a lot of great projects in their tracks. However Vectis Radio's Saturday Short Breaks course is one project that has been able continue to help young people throughout the past year. That is due to a dedicated team of volunteers, a new way of thinking and some inspirational young people determined to push on and deliver local radio that helps to build their life skills.

The Saturday Short Breaks course has been running for the past few years and is funded by the Isle of Wight Council. The sessions have consisted of up to four IWC Gateway Card holders spending three hours in the studio, preparing, producing and editing links for the Sunday afternoon takeover show, whilst also contributing to the live Saturday Morning Show on Vectis Radio.

The first lockdown put an end to this, but the Vectis team were determined not to completely abandon the students who have worked so hard to build their weekly show. That's when system was put in place whereby those youngsters who were able, could work remotely, presenting and producing their links from home. The enthusiasm shown by the students was such that the station decided to try broadcasting live from home allowing the students to connect into the system via their home PC or laptop.

This has proved remarkably successful and has allowed the station to keep up student engagement by still enabling them to go live on air. Additionally, the students still prepare and record their links for the Sunday show.

Lisa Haycox O'Toole, mother of students Jasper and Ophelia said:

“Thank goodness we're able to record and stream from home. I don't quite know what I'd do. I've got them all week driving me mad with home schooling, at least I've got some peace when they're recording on the radio.

In between Lockdowns, Vectis Radio ran a rota of one to one sessions at the station's Riverside Centre studio with the others joining in from home. This allowed tutors to continue giving the team practice on editing audio, which really needs a face to face tutorial.

Vectis Radio director and 4Ps tutor Kelvin Currie said:

“Whilst we'd love to get back to being in the studio, the online shows are proving to be both popular and a lot of fun”
