Awards 2021

It was another great year for Vectis Radio at the 2021 Community Radio Awards which took place in Coventry, the UK City of Culture 2021.

With six nominations including the prestigious ‘station of the year’, Vectis Radio picked up three awards including two golds.

Kelvin Currie picked up Gold in the ‘Sage Volunteer of the Year’category and Vectis Radio’s groundbreaking 4Ps Project took home gold for ‘Community Development Project of the Year’

On collecting his award, Kelvin joked “there are some benefits to being old”. Vectis Radio’s tech guru continued “I enjoy my time in radio and I enjoy bringing through the young people and passing on the skills”. Kelvin has been part of Vectis Radio from soon after it launched as an Internet only station back in 2010 and has been instrumental in setting up outside broadcasts and overseeing the move to FM104.6 in November 2017. He is also an integral part of the 4Ps Radio Training School or (The 4Ps Project)

The 4Ps Project was set up in 2013 and has helped in excess of 300 young people on the Island, boosting confidence and improving communication skills for people with and without additional needs, many who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. It does this by teaching the key ingredients of radio (the 4P’s) Presenting, Production, Podcasting and Promotion. The benefits have been extraordinary with many young people leaving Vectis Radio with a new found sense of belief and improved life skills.

Vectis Radio station manager Ian Mac collected the award and paid tribute to the students. He said: “They’re amazing! To work with kids who have learning difficulties and problems, and give them some hope by using the main ingredients of radio, and watching them grow and be better people is just absolutely amazing and it’s a real privilege.

Furthermore, Vectis Radio’s 4Ps Project also picked up a Silver Award in the ‘Innovation of the Year’ category for the Short Breaks in Lockdown Show. The COVID-19 pandemic saw the world stand still in March 2020 and everybody had to think differently about how to function day to day. The Short Breaks team could no longer come in to Vectis Radio each Saturday morning to record their weekly show and instead were set up remotely from their homes. Because of this, they were able to continue to present and produce a weekly show through each lockdown and developed an even greater understanding of working independently to a deadline. The commitment and desire shown from the team is something Vectis Radio are very proud of and a Silver Award is so richly deserved by each member of the Short Breaks team.

Although Vectis Radio did not collect the Station of the Year Award on this occasion, we are incredibly proud to have been shortlisted as one of the top 5 community radio stations in the UK in 2021 and there’s always next year!!

MESSAGES

“Congratulations to Vectis Radio on winning a gold award for the 4 Ps Training School. This award is so well-deserved and I cannot commend the project highly enough.

Many of our students have now taken part and it is fantastic to see them having fun and exploring areas of their own interests, whilst developing their communication skills. Every student that I have seen complete the project has hugely benefitted and seen their confidence levels soar.

Students always return to school excited to share what they have experienced at the radio station and what they have achieved. The project really does boost the aspirations of these young people and helps them to see what they can achieve.”

Matthew Parr-Burman – Executive Headteacher, Isle of Wight Education Federation.
