THE SATURDAY MID MORNING SHOW - 10AM-1PM - SATURDAY - THE RETRO SHOW - 10AM-1PM - SUNDAY
Hi, I’m Kelvin and I present The Retro Show on Sundays. Alongside my wife of over 40 years, Maggie, we also present the Tuesday Afternoon Show. Radio has fascinated me since an early age.
The simplicity of radio and its very personal relationship with the listener has always appealed to me. Although, in my wildest dreams, I never thought I’d become a presenter—let alone help run a radio station. Starting when Vectis Radio was an online-only station, I’m proud to have been part of its evolution into a fully licensed Community Radio Station broadcasting on FM. We are now heading towards our next stage: Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), in which I play a major role as a director of the Community Interest Company that holds the Ofcom licence for DAB on the Island.
My technical skills—gained from a lifetime in telecommunications and as a keen radio amateur—have served me well at Vectis Radio. These skills help with setting up outside broadcasts and other technical aspects. I was behind the technical side of getting the station on FM in 2017 and increasing our transmitter power in 2020.
There are more technical challenges to come, and I look forward to tackling them.
My experience with music stems from my days as a mobile DJ, playing at countless parties and weddings since the 1970s. I began with a couple of beer crates full of 7-inch vinyl singles and have since transitioned to using laptops. I put this experience to the test every Sunday morning on The Retro Show.
Working with young people through the 4Ps scheme—many of whom have additional needs—is especially rewarding. Not only do I share my love of radio, but I also witness their growth in confidence and communication. It’s so worthwhile that I now serve as a Trustee of the 4Ps charity.
In my view, broadcasting to the Island and beyond is a privilege—and one I enjoy immensely. Join me on Sundays from 10 a.m. and on Tuesdays from 1 p.m.
